Pet Birds For Sale

The Honorable Budgerigar

Posted by on

Not all people are dog or cat people. When it comes to live, small pets, some people prefer hamsters, guinea pigs, turtles, and small pet birds. Live birds have increased in popularity in North America, especially with large parrots such as Macaws, Cockatiels, African Greys, among others for their ability to mimic human speech. The pet bird who has taken the title of the world’s most popular pet bird is the hand tamed budgie! Budgerigar parakeets or budgies are the third most popular pets just behind dogs and cats. Miniscule parrots, in comparison to Macaws, these adorable tiny birds are affordable and super social. Easily trained and hand tamed, budgies make the best pet bird for a reason.

What Is a Budgie? Tiny Parrot? Fancy Parakeet?

It is common to misunderstand the budgerigar parakeets budgies relationship since all budgies are parakeets, but not all parakeets are budgies. Parakeets are a species of parrot that have long tail feathers. Simply put, parakeet covers parrots, which includes budgies. But because they are still parrots, budgies, unlike other live, small pets like guinea pigs or hamsters, can also learn to mimic human language and may be closer in intelligence to the Einstein of the bird world, the African Grey Parrot, since they are arguably better at speaking than other larger parrot relatives such as the Macaw. Between males and females, male budgies are usually the better talkers, but female budgies can learn a few words and whistle well. Male budgies can even use words in context with one recorded budgie knowing about 1700 words!

The native Australian wild birds flock the grasslands searching for water. Budgies in the wild are naturally green and are smaller than pet budgies. There are two types of budgerigar parakeets, the English budgie and the American budgie with the English budgie being the bigger bird of the two. English Budgies are better talkers, and an English Budgie currently holds the world record for number of words and phrases spoken by any bird. Since tamed budgies are so popular, humans have strategically bred them to make hand reared baby budgies with different colored feathers. There are no problems with “unnatural” colored budgies, but you won’t be able to find a wild bird budgie that is blue. Even without the pretty colored fancy parakeets, budgies still maintain the same personalities and characteristics as their wild bird counterparts.all parakeets are budgies. What to Consider When Looking for Budgies for Sale

Even though budgies are small, affordable, and live shorter lives than larger parrots, they still need as much attention and care in and out of their bird cages. They are a “hands-on” pet and enjoy interacting with humans and do not do well in isolation. If you are out of the house for a large portion of the day, you may want to get your budgie a companion. But, if you’re looking for an interactive “pet bird” to build a relationship with your budgie, a lone bird is better.

Since budgies for sale can be inexpensive and smaller than other parrots, many people see budgies as a “throwaway pet” underestimating the amount of pet care they must invest in their pet budgie. It is important to remember that budgies, as parrots, need a lot of interaction to live a long life that could be up to 15 years. With proper treatment and bird care, a budgie can be one of the best small pets you can own - the statistics don’t lie!
