DNA Testing

If there is not a gender option listed for this bird on our website, that particular species is 'monomorphic', which means we’re unable to determine gender without DNA testing. DNA testing is an additional $99 per bird to be tested. If you want us to do our best without DNA testing, just make a note in the comment section of your order letting us know your preference. Please note that if no DNA testing is ordered, we are unable to guarantee a preferred gender but will do our best. See our FAQs for more info.

Temperament:  Black-cheeked Waxbills are active, not restless finches who need a lot of room for exercise. Planted greenery in the cage or aviary will give them a feeling of security.

Breeding:  Monogamous, territorial solitary nester, with pairs staying together for at least 3-15 months. The nest is built by both sexes, consisting of a thick-walled ball of grass leaves and inflorescences with a long entrance tunnel on the bottom. A cup-shaped false nest may be added to the top of the structure to distract predators from the real entrance.

Diet: Classic Finch Seed, Fresh chopped veggies, small meal worms, grass heads, flowering broccoli heads, nectar,  Dried Egg FoodMineral GritCuttlefish Bone
