Product Description

Identification: Canary-winged parakeets (Brotogeris versicoluris), members of the genus Brotogeris, are small, South American parakeets often referred to as White-Winged Parakeets. Their engaging personalities and gentle temperament made them much sought-after pets during the 1970s and ’80s. Active, inquisitive and outgoing, canary-winged parakeets will bring joy to all of your family members. The Canary-Winged Parakeet is known for its agility and enjoys spending time hanging upside down on a playgym.

Geography:  South America also along the Amazon River, south over east, central and south Brazil, into north and east Bolivia, Paraguay, northern Argentina and eastern Peru.

Song / Call:  Click to hear the Canary-Wing Parakeet

Size / Weight: 9"

Sexing: Monomorphic (visually difficult to sex). DNA testing is available to guarantee desired gender.

Temperament: Canary-Winged Parakeets are often described as affectionate, intelligent, playful and bold little parakeets. They can learn a variety of tricks, and some even learn to imitate human speech. Canary-Winged Parakeets can be social with other Brotogeris species as long as patience and care is used when introducing the birds. They do not lose their bonding with their human owners if they receive daily one-on-one attention. They are not noted as being great talkers - but some say that Canary-wing Parakeets are better talkers than the popular grey-cheeks. They usually can pick up a few words or sentences and are considered to be semi-noisy birds.

Breeding: They do generally well in a colony system as long as the aviaries are spacious enough to accommodate them. Breeders noted that other pairs may help raise unrelated chicks in the flight. Older siblings also frequently participate in the task of raising future clutches. In small flights aggression towards other birds has been observed. Breeding in spacious birdroom cages is also possible, although less desirable for their long-term health and well-being. The social and practical aspects of jointly raising chicks is also of consideration; however, this can be a double edge sword as aggression can also occur; particularly in cases of incompatibility or territorial aggression - should the space be too tight. These parakeets tend to be passive in small cages, but are active in roomy flights.

Lifespan: 15 years

Diet: Parakeet Seed, fresh foods such as fruits, (bananas, berries, figs, rose hips) vegetables, greens, grains and legumes on a daily basis. Also offer greens such as chard, spinach and bok choy, as well as sprouted seeds, nuts (not too much) and whole-grain breads
